Keen to Teach in New Zealand? Here's What You Need to Know!

Are you ready to join us Kiwis and make a difference in the classroom? Teaching in New Zealand is an exciting opportunity, and we're thrilled you're considering it! Before you pack your bags, here’s some essential information to help you along the way.

Before You Apply

Teachers hold an incredibly important place in our society, and we value the skills and experience you bring. To support overseas-trained teachers making the move, the New Zealand Government offers a relocation grant of up to $10,000 NZD.

What Do You Need to Apply?

To teach in Aotearoa New Zealand, you must be registered and hold a current practising certificate. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Proof of Training: Show that you're satisfactorily trained to teach.
  • English Language Competency: Demonstrate your proficiency in English.
  • Police Clearance: Obtain an overseas police clearance.
  • Identity Verification: Complete the appropriate Proof of Identity form (there are separate forms if you’re overseas or already in New Zealand).
  • Supporting Documents: Gather the following:
    • Copies of qualifications, transcripts, and NZQA assessment (if applicable).
    • Testimonials from previous employers.
    • Evidence of teaching assessments (such as appraisals or observations).
    • Documentation of induction and mentoring during your career.
    • Statements or certificates of professional standing (e.g., evidence of Qualified Teacher Status in the UK).
    • An updated CV.

Already have this covered? You can apply for your teacher registration and your practising certificate.

Important Notes

  • Graduate Teacher Programmes (GTP) from the UK and stand-alone Teacher Licensure from the US or Philippines (e.g., PRC certificates) are not recognised pathways for teacher registration in New Zealand.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) certification alone does not meet the minimum requirements for the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).

If you’ve already received a job offer to teach at a New Zealand school, or early childhood centre, let us know! Teachers with definite offers are a top priority for processing.

Registration Isn’t Sector-Specific

In New Zealand, teacher registration and certification apply across all sectors, early childhood, primary, and secondary education. It’s up to the employer to decide if your skills and qualifications meet their specific needs.

For early childhood education (ECE), the Ministry of Education sets additional licensing and funding requirements. If your qualification is assessed as comparable to a New Zealand secondary teaching qualification but not ECE, further confirmation may be needed. For more details, contact the Teaching Council at reviews@teachingcouncil.nz.

How Long Does It Take?

Processing your application can take between 6 to 12 weeks, depending on its complexity. Make sure you allow plenty of time before your planned start date.
