Understanding Early Childhood Education

What does ECE mean?

ECE refers to Early Childhood Education, which is the education of children from 0-5.

In Aotearoa what does the ECE setting look like?

In Aotearoa, ECE settings include nurseries, toddler groups, and preschool groups. Each setting is tailored to the developmental needs of children aged 0-5 years. ECE teachers engage in learning through play to support the growth and learning of young children. Each Centre has their own unique philosophy and often creates a blend of more than one philosophy. These can include, free play, Reggio Emilla, Pikler RIE, Montessori and Nature based.
